The annual Mobile World Congress serves as a massive coming-out party for the latest and greatest cell phones. Making waves this year: Solar-powered handsets, a new Android phone, a touchscreen phone that records HD video, and more.
A couple of quick notes before we get started: While Mobile World Congress is primarily a showcase for European phones, many of the handsets on display will eventually make landfall in the States in one form or another—although exactly when (and for how much) is, for the most part, still up in the air. Stay tuned for exact release dates and pricing. Also: The phones I've listed below are just a few of the highlights from the show; for an exhaustive report, check out PhoneScoop's multi-part round-up.
Samsung OmniaHD
High-resolution displays are all the rage this year, and the OmniaHD's 3.7-inch, active-matrix OLED screen is, from all reports, quite an eye-opener—we're talking QHD (360 by 640-pixel) resolution, and even the jaded bloggers at Gizmodo raved, calling it "simply mindblowing … no matter how much you turn it, the color and contrast remain the same." And get this: the OmniaHD also records up to 720p (24 frames/second) video, a first (as far as I know, at least) for cell phones. That said, Gizmodo was bummed by the "lousy response" of the OmniaHD's interface.

Sony Ericsson "concept" phone: The Idou
Still in the conceptual stage (natch), the Idou garnered a truckload of buzz thanks to its gorgeous touchscreen and snazzy interface, but as Wired points out, it's the Idou's 12-megapixel camera that got the most attention. Twelve megapixels … heck, that's more than most still digital cameras, much less a camera phone. That said, megapixels aren't everything when it comes to image quality, and as one MWC griped to Wired, "It's crazy, a megapixel frenzy … how good can the optics be in a phone that size?" How good, indeed?

Here comes the sun: Solar-powered phones
Solar power is in when it comes to cell phones, and both Samsung and LG had a pair of sun-powered handsets on the show floor—although both manufacturers were light on the details. Samsung had its upcoming Blue Earth (which I blogged about last week) secured behind a pane of glass, while LG's unnamed solar handset looks like more of a concept than anything else. While I like the idea of solar-powered phones, it remains to be seen whether they'll actually be practical.

HTC Magic
The second handset running on Google's Android platform finally made its debut in Barcelona, and from all accounts it's a welcome, if not revolutionary improvement over T-Mobile's impressive but clunky G1 (which is also made by HTC). Engadget liked the smooth curves and thinner shell, as well as the new on-screen keypad (the Magic jettisons the G1's slide-out keypad). Still no word on when the Europe-bound handset will arrive in the U.S., unfortunately.

HTC Diamond2 and Touch Pro2
Also on hand from HTC: Updates to its touchscreen Diamond and Touch Pro handsets, including a tweaked interface that lets you quickly browse all your text, e-mail, and voice communications with a specific contact. CNET's Bonnie Cha liked the revamped, brushed-metal shells, as well as the Touch Pro2's new keypad (now with more space between the keys). That said, both phones are powered by the tricky-to-use Windows Mobile 6.1; Cha reports that HTC is promised upgrades for the upcoming WM 6.5 in the coming months.

More camera phones from Nokia and Samsung
Both Samsung and Nokia had a couple of hot new 8-megapixel cameras on hand: The Memoir, which I blogged about earlier this month (my review unit is in the mail, supposedly), and Nokia's N86, a dual-slider that (according to PhoneScoop) boasts Carl Zeiss optics, and OLED display, GPS, 8GB of on-board storage, Wi-Fi, and 3G.

Multi-core mobile processors
Not a phone, per se, but an exciting mobile technology that could be coming to a smartphone near you. VentureBeat reports that component makers ARM and ST-Ericsson was set to trot out its Cortex-A9 processor, a multi-core update to the ARM processors in such handsets as the iPhone and iPod Touch. What's so special about multi-core processors, you ask? Well, think two engines instead of one, which means more processing power, less overheating, and longer battery life. I like the sound of that.

Pioneer’s Kuro Killing: A Tipping Point in the Plasma Era

The end of the Pioneer Kuro line of TVs represented a true tipping point in the TV industry, one preceded by long-gestating momentum from opposing forces. The recession and LCDs tipped over plasmas for good, and the slope downward will be quite steep, and fast.

Last week, Pioneer announced it was killing off its critically acclaimed TV business by March 2010 and will concentrate on car and audio/visual systems. It was a dramatic fall for a company that just one year ago had CES abuzz with its newest plasma TV, the so-called “Ultimate Black” Kuro.
The Kuro’s tech was impressive because it reduced light emissions from black areas of the screen to such a degree that at its maximum brightness, the contrast ratio was “almost infinite.” The result was a plasma display with the most vibrant, colorful images yet.

But even at the hype’s peak, problems in the plasma industry were apparent.
Plasmas were at their most popular from 2004 to 2006, a period that saw them overtake rear-projection TVs as the top big-TV format. But they had a tough time offsetting their lowest average prices with high sale volumes. The spectre of LCDs also prompted many customers to hold off on making a purchase. By February ‘08, soon after the recession had officially taken hold, premium-quality Pioneers seemed out of touch. Most critically, LCDs were sporting features long the domain of plasma: bigger screens, greater contrast ratios, thinner and cheaper sets. LCD picture quality still failed to reach plasma levels, but to average consumers, the difference was no longer obvious.
Fast-forward to the start of 2009, and LCDs were outselling plasmas 8-to-1 globally, and the dominating the best-selling lists on Amazon.com.
Pioneer tried a last-ditch partnership with Panasonic to create a version of its plasma TVs, contributing its own “secret sauce” to keep the Kuro tech flowing, but that effort appears to be over.
The slumping demand is already having consequences: Projected losses of $1.41 billion in 2008-09 (following a loss of $203 million in 2007-08) and a nearly 50 percent drop in operating revenue have set the scene for 10,000 jobs cuts and the closing of U.S., UK and Japanese facilities. But Pioneer’s not the only TV maker suffering. They’re all taking it on the chin, regardless of display type.
Both Hitachi andVizio had to end the bleeding by shuttering plasmas to concentrate on LCDs. And not even the usually flush holiday period buoyed TV companies to a safe financial landing: Sony, Panasonic, and LG all posted lower quarterly profits.
Component suppliers have similarly been unable to escape the pain. As Om noted in recent posts, screen manufacturer Corning posted fourth-quarter 2008 revenues of $1.1 billion and still had to let go of 3,500 jobs.
Pioneer’s decision to end its plasma production was more complicated. It bought out NEC’s plasma business in 2004, used it as an OEM for its glass, but was recently forced to shutter the unit. Now, the only plasma manufacturers left standing are Panasonic, LG, and Samsung, all of which make their own components.
Panasonic is in good position to benefit from Kuro’s death. Most of the Pioneer engineers who came up with Kuro switched sides and are now working for Panasonic. In addition, recent demos have shown that Panasonic plasmas are nearing Kuro quality. Already in possession of the biggest plasma market share in the world (at more than 35 percent), the company will be able to build a diversified product line using plasma TVs as a premium screen type that appeals to a niche that still wants them. Add to that the fact that it receives significant revenues from selling its glass to other companies, including JVC and Fujitsu, and it appears that it’ll be able to keep plasmas afloat longer than any other company. Panasonic will inherit the burdens of the difficult economy and the LCD challenge, but once plasma is no longer economically feasible, its own LCDs will have likely caught up in picture quality. In fact, ultimate black contrast tech is already getting closer to LCDs. So it’s only a matter of a few years (maybe even less) before plasmas finally die out.
As for Pioneer, not all is lost. Reps say that the plasma TVs only accounted for 14 percent of its business worldwide, and patents for the Kuro technology will provide a profit for awhile. But any positives are bittersweet. The legacy of the Kuro TV will be that it was another best-in-class technology that was humbled by the force of the economy and the competitive market.

How to partition and format the hard disk using the Windows XP Setup program

You can use the Windows XP Setup program to partition and format the hard disk.

To do this, use the following steps:

Step 1: Partition the hard disk
a. Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD or DVD drive, or insert the first Windows XP Setup disk into the floppy disk drive, and then restart the computer to start the Windows XP Setup program.

Note If you are using the Windows XP Setup disks, insert each additional disk when you are prompted, and then press ENTER to continue after you insert each disk.
b. If you are prompted, select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD or DVD drive.
c. If your hard disk controller requires a third-party original equipment manufacturer (OEM) driver, press F6 to specify the driver. For more information about how to use F6 to supply a third-party OEM device driver while the Windows Setup program is running, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

d. At the Welcome to Setup page, press ENTER.

Note If you are using the Setup disks (six bootable disks), the setup prompts you to insert the Windows XP CD.
e. Press F8 to accept the Windows XP Licensing Agreement.
f. If an existing Windows XP installation is detected, you are prompted to repair it. To bypass the repair, press ESC.
g. All existing partitions and non-partitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard disk. Use the ARROW keys to select an existing partition, or create a new partition by selecting the non-partitioned space where you want to create a new partition. You can also press C to create a new partition using non-partitioned space.

Note If you want to create a partition where one or more partitions already exist, you must first delete the existing partition or partitions, and then create the new partition. You can press D to delete an existing partition, and then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this step for each existing partition that you want to include in the new partition. When all the partitions are deleted, select the remaining non-partitioned space, and then press C to create the new partition.
h. To create the partition with the maximum size, press ENTER. To specify the partition size, type the size in megabytes (MB) for the new partition, and then press ENTER.
i. If you want to create additional partitions, repeat steps g. and h.
j. To format the partition and install Windows XP, go to step 2.

Step 2: Format the hard disk and install Windows XP
a. Use the ARROW keys to select the partition where you want to install Windows XP, and then press ENTER.
b. Select the format option that you want to use to format the partition. You can select from the following options:
o Format the partition by using the NTFS file system (Quick)
o Format the partition by using the FAT file system (Quick)
o Format the partition by using the NTFS file system
o Format the partition by using the FAT file system
o Leave the current file system intact (no changes)
Notes
o If the selected partition is a new partition, the option to leave the current file system intact is not available.
o If the selected partition is larger than 32 gigabytes (GB), the FAT file system option is not available.
o If the selected partition is larger than 2 GB, the Windows Setup program uses the FAT32 file system (you must press ENTER to confirm).
o If the partition is smaller than 2 GB, the Windows Setup program uses the FAT16 file system.
o If you deleted and created a new System partition, but you are installing Windows XP on a different partition, you are prompted to select a file system for both the System and Startup partitions.
c. Press ENTER.
d. After the Windows Setup program formats the partition, follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install Windows XP. After the Windows Setup program is finished and you have restarted the computer, you can now enjoy using your PC again, it's clean and fresh.

Microsoft and Google team-up?

Microsoft has licensed its technical know-how to nearly every company, including rivals such as Apple and Nokia.

Now Redmond can add Google to the list. To help power the Google Sync product that was announced on Monday, the search giant has licensed Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol for sharing information between a server and mobile phone.

Google Sync allows users to synchronize their contacts, and in some cases calendar information, with Google's Web-based services. It works with a range of phones including Windows Mobile phones, Apple's iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry, and phones from Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

Generally, companies have licensed the ActiveSync protocol to link data between a cell phone and a Microsoft Exchange server. In this case, though, Google is using ActiveSync to link Google data off of their servers to mobile phones.

Although Google and Microsoft have cooperated in some areas in the past, the deal on Monday is the first announced example of one of those companies licensing the other's intellectual property, according to Microsoft.

Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's top intellectual property lawyer touted the move.

"Google's licensing of these Microsoft patents relating to the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol is a clear (acknowledgment) of the innovation taking place at Microsoft," Gutierrez said in a statement. "This agreement is also a great example of Microsoft's openness to generally license our patents under fair and reasonable terms so long as licensees respect Microsoft intellectual property."

Gutierrez noted that the company has struck more than 500 licensing deals since it began its intellectual property-sharing push in 2003.

As to whether the deal between Google and Microsoft covers Exchange synchronizing to an Android device, a Microsoft representative told ZDNet Asia's sister site CNET News: "Android is not covered by this agreement."

For now at least, there's no one to keep us from eating to beat disease, even if that disease is a multi-headed monster like cancer. But unlike prescription cancer drugs, most of which are designed to treat the illness, pharmaceutical foods are here to help prevent it.

We've rounded up the newest of these nutritional standouts, along with strategies for slipping them into your diet. And while none of the lucky seven that follow are FDA-approved, your body will be Men's Health-improved after you eat them.




1.Curry up

The right spice can make the meal—and block the tumor. That's what University of Illinois researchers discovered when they pitted turmeric against 19 different strains of H. pylori, the ulcer-inducing bacterium that's been linked to colon and gastric cancers. In every case, turmeric took the teeth out of H. pylori.

"Turmeric didn't necessarily reduce the bacterial load," says Gail Mahady, Ph.D., the study's lead author. "What it did was reduce the chronic inflammation caused by H. pylori. And it's this inflammation that has been associated with the development of cancer."

The best way to increase your intake of turmeric? Eat Indian food. Specifically, try dining on curry, which is rich in turmeric and often contains additional cancer squashers, such as garlic and onions.
Another option: Slather extra mustard on all your sandwiches; the bright yellow variety is loaded with turmeric.

2.Gill or be killed

Shark cartilage won't ward off cancer, but a shark's diet might. A recently completed 12-year Harvard study of nearly 48,000 men determined that those who ate fish more than three times a week were 40 percent less likely to develop advanced prostate cancer than those who hit the surf only twice a month.
It's those amazing omega-3s again, though they don't deserve all the credit. "Fish also contains vitamin A and vitamin D, which may help prevent prostate cancer," says Michael F. Leitzmann, M.D., a coauthor of the study.
That's why it may be better to skip supplements and stick with actual fish. Salmon, mackerel, and herring have the best balance of omega-3s, vitamin A, and vitamin D.
Note: Don't wait until the weekend to go fishing, says Dr. Leitzmann. "Space your fish consumption out over the week so you consume a steady supply of these compounds.

3.Add zest to life

Fresh-squeezed OJ contains all the health benefits of oranges except one: the cancer protection in the peel. People who regularly consume citrus zest reduce their risk of squamous-cell skin cancer by 30 percent, according to a recent University of Arizona study. Even lab rats live longer on the stuff; animal studies suggest that citrus zest can actually shrink existing tumors.

Turns out the oils in the peels of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit contain powerful compounds that stimulate the body's production of a detoxifying enzyme, explains study author Iman Hakim, M.D., Ph.D., who says the results had an impact on her research group. "Several people around here started chewing on citrus peels," she says.

Another option: Grate the colored portion of the peel and add the pile of zest (at least a tablespoonful) to soups, salads, and salsa, or sprinkle it on chicken and fish.

4.Get white hot

Green tea grabs all the headlines as a tumor-taming brew, but the white kind surpasses it at preventing colon cancer. When researchers at Oregon State University's Linus Pauling Institute tested the two teas' abilities to block colon-polyp growth, the white tea beverage was about 10 percent more effective. In fact, it stopped polyps as effectively as sulindac, a powerful anti-inflammatory drug.

And while prescription anti-inflammatories can cause internal bleeding and ulcers, "tea is pretty much guaranteed not to cause side effects," says Gayle Orner, Ph.D., the study's lead author. The study used Exotica white tea (80 tea bags for $20 at stashtea.com); 3 cups a day may be enough to cut your cancer risk.

5.Find your whey

Not since lycopene landed in our lives has there been a more promising prostate-cancer-fighting nutrient than whey protein. In a recent Ohio State University study, researchers treated human prostate cells with whey protein and then measured the cells' levels of a natural cancer-blocking compound called glutathione.

The finding: Glutathione levels rose by a remarkable 64 percent. "Whey is a great source of the amino acid cysteine, and cysteine can become glutathione in the body," explains Rosemary L. Walzem, R.D., Ph.D., director of the Center for Nutrition, Health, and Food Genomics at Texas A&M University.

One of the best sources of whey is yogurt; a lot of the protein is in the clear liquid on top, so don't pour it off. You can also pick up powdered whey-protein isolate—vanilla-flavored—and add it to instant oatmeal.

6.Berry yourself alive

Make every day Thanksgiving and you could slash your risk of several different cancers. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles have confirmed that cranberries contain a trove of tumor-blocking compounds, including phenolic acids, glycosides, and anthocyanins.

These phytochemicals are effective at preventing cancer down below—in the colon and prostate—as well as up top—on the head and neck. "They force cancer cells to die or they inhibit their unregulated growth," says David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., a coauthor of the study.

To hit your daily cran quota, down a small glass of cranberry juice (the type that lists at least 27 percent juice on the label) at breakfast and snack on Craisins (sweetened dried cranberries) throughout the day.

7. Pledge to the gamma frat

The nutrient with the coolest name—gamma tocopherol—may also be the one with the fastest draw in a showdown with cancer. When Purdue University researchers pitted this form of vitamin E against prostate- and lung-cancer cells, they discovered that it was able to stop the cells in their microscopic tracks.

What's more, gamma tocopherol helped kill existing tumor cells without hurting healthy cells, says Qing Jiang, Ph.D., the study's lead author.

But what about the research showing that vitamin E supplements are worthless, and perhaps even dangerous? Doesn't apply to gamma tocopherol, since it isn't included in most E supplements.

Instead, you'll find it in sesame oil, which you can sub for other cooking oils or sprinkle over salads. Or, if you want a source you can sink your teeth into, munch on walnuts.

Lenovo CEO steps down

Lenovo President and CEO William Amelio resigned Thursday after the Chinese PC maker reported a US$97 million loss in the third quarter of 2008, ended Dec. 31.

In a statement filed with Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, Lenovo's board of directors said Yang Yuanqing has relinquished his role as chairman to replace Amelio as CEO, effective Feb. 5, 2009. Yang will remain as an executive director, and had served as the company's CEO until April 2005 when he was appointed board chairman.

The announcement comes at the end of Amelio's three-year contract with the company, Lenovo said, adding that Amelio will serve as a special advisor until Sep. 30.

In a separate filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange, Lenovo reported losses of US$96.7 million in the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2008, compared to a US$172.6 million profit in the same quarter 2007.

The PC maker said a market shift toward entry-level PCs, aggressive pricing and currency fluctuations had affected Lenovo's gross margin, which dipped to 9.8 percent year-on-year. Its gross profit fell 48 percent to US$354 million.

Coupled with a decline in sales, the pressure on margins resulted in the third-quarter loss, the company said.

According to figures from IDC, the Asia-Pacific PC market registered its first year-on-year decline in a decade, where unit shipments in the fourth quarter of 2008 dipped by 5 percent to 17.2 million.

A former Dell Computer executive, Amelio himself had replaced previous Lenovo CEO Stephen Ward in December 2005--a year after the Chinese company purchased IBM's PC group.

Amelio's resignation follows Lenovo's announcement last month to cut its workforce by 11 percent, or 2,500 jobs, encompassing positions in management and support functions. Under the restructuring, Lenovo said its Greater China, Asia-Pacific and Russia operations will be consolidated into a single business unit.

The cost-cutting exercise is expected to help the company achieve savings of US$300 million annually, with cost reductions across "nearly every business unit", a company spokesperson said in an earlier interview with ZDNet Asia.

In the filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange, Lenovo said it will "continue to adjust its business model" in line with the market trend toward entry-level PCs. However, the company said the next several quarters will remain "very challenging" for Lenovo and the overall PC industry.
