Mayon Volcano alert level raised to 4; eruption seen within days

State volcanologists on Sunday afternoon raised the alert status of Mayon Volcano in Albay province, Bicol to 4 after noting rumbling sounds in Sto. Domingo town, saying a major eruption is possible within days.

"This is to notify the public that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is now raising the alert status of Mayon Volcano from alert level 3 to alert level 4. This means that a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within days," the agency said on its Web site at 2:30 p.m.

To ensure public safety, Phivolcs said it was recommending an extended danger zone from the summit of 8 kilometers at the southern sector and 7 kilometers at the northern sector.

"Areas just outside of this extended danger zone should prepare for evacuation in the event explosive eruptions intensify," it added.

The Maguindanao massacre occurred on November 23, 2009, in the Maguindanao province on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The victims were trying to obtain a certificate of candidacy for Esmael Mangudadatu, vice mayor of Buluan town. Mangudadatu was challenging Andal Ampatuan, Jr. (son of the former Maguindanao governor Datu Andal Ampatuan) in the Maguindanao governatorial election,[1] part of the national elections in 2010. Those killed included Mangudadatu's wife, two sisters, lawyers, aides, and some mediamen.

As of November 24, 46 deaths were confirmed by Lt. Col. Rolando Nerona of the Philippine Army.[2] Reporters Without Borders announced that at least 12 of the victims were journalists, including several members of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, making this the deadliest such incident in the history of news media.[3]

Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo responded to the news of the massacre by declaring a state of emergency in Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato City.[2] Speaker of the House Prospero Nograles called on the police to quickly identify the perpetrators of the massacre and disarm private militias.[4] The Filipino Department of Justice created a panel of special prosecutors to handle cases arising from the massacre.[5]

In the aftermath, Nueva Ecija Rep. Edno Joson said the massacre might affect, or even lead to the cancellation of, the scheduled 2010 presidential elections.[4] Candidates in the election condemned the massacre,[6] as did the European Union.[7]

PADANG, Indonesia – A powerful earthquake that struck western Indonesia trapped thousands of people under collapsed buildings — including hospitals, a hotel and a classroom, officials said. At least 200 bodies were found in one coastal city and the toll was expected to be far higher.

The temblor Wednesday started fires, severed roads and cut off power and communications to Padang, a coastal city of 900,000 on Sumatra island. Thousands fled in panic, fearing a tsunami. It was felt hundreds of miles (kilometers) away in Malaysia and Singapore, causing buildings there to sway.

The undersea quake of 7.6 magnitude was followed by a powerful, shallow inland earthquake on Thursday morning with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It hit about 150 miles (240 kilometers) south of Padang at a depth of just under 20 miles (24 kilometers).

Typhoon Ondoy has brought devastating damages in the Philippines, particularly in Metro Manila (NCR), Pasig, Rizal, Cavite, Pampanga, Laguna and Quezon City.
So far Typhoon Ondoy was the first typhoon that hits the Philippine Territory with huge amount of rainfall that causes floods in different areas of NCR.
And now, I’ve just read from a yahoo Philippine article that Philippine flood crisis (Typhoon Ondoy) deepens as toll hits 246

Hundreds of thousands of exhausted Philippine flood survivors crammed into schools, gymnasiums, churches and other makeshift shelters on Tuesday as the death toll from the weekend disaster soared to 246.

Three days after a once-in-a-generation storm pounded Manila and surrounding regions, officials said they were unable to cope with the enormous number of flood victims still pouring into evacuation centres.
"More people are coming in by the hour.... We don't know how long we will be able to sustain this," said Joe Ferrer, a local government official in charge of a shelter on a basketball court on the edge of the Manila area.

"We need clothing, food supplies, food rations and medicine."

At 4:00 a.m. today, the center of Typhoon "JUAN" was located based on satellite and surface data at 630 km East of Aparri, Cagayan (18.7°N 128.2°E) with maximum sustained winds of 160 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph. Forecast to move West at 24 kph.

Forecast:

Cagayan including Calayan and Babuyan Group of Islands, and Isabela will experience stormy weather with rough to very rough seas. The rest of Northern Luzon will have rains and gusty winds. The rest of the country will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast to north will prevail over rest of Luzon and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast to northwest with slight to moderate seas.

I just got this breaking news that Patrick Swayze dies "The leading man in the movie "Ghost" with Demi Moore as her wife. That movie was really box office hit. Another movie he did was "Dirty Dancing" where Patrick had shown his talent in dancing that truly moves the audience.

Patrick Swayze died yesterday,Monday, September 14, 2009, after a a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.
